Congress appears to have averted a government shutdown — for now.
In a rare marathon Saturday session on Capitol Hill, the U.S. House overwhelmingly passed a short-term agreement that will keep the government funded for 45 days.
Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy sent shockwaves throughout the halls of Congress when put a continuing resolution on the floor over objections from members of his right flank, who have vowed to oust him if he attempted to work with Democrats.
In the end, nearly every House Democrat voted for McCarthy’s plan, while 91 conservative Republicans opposed it. It is expected to easily pass the Senate and be signed by President Joe Biden before Saturday’s midnight deadline, ensuring that millions of federal employees — from TSA officers to active duty service members — will continue getting paid while also dragging this funding battle through November.
