NEW: Twitter permanently suspends Rep. Greene
The Congresswoman repeatedly violated the platform's COVID-19 policies
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Rome) was permanently suspended from Twitter on Sunday, the social media platform said in a statement.
It’s unclear exactly which tweet(s) caused the suspension, but Twitter’s statement noted that the far-right Congresswoman repeatedly used her personal account to spread false information about the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We permanently suspended the account for repeated violations of our COVID-19 misinformation policy,” Twitter said. “We’ve been clear that, per our strike system for this policy, we will permanently suspend accounts for repeated violations of the policy.”
Twitter went on to highlight that Greene had been suspended several times previously, with punishments ranging from 12-hour suspensions to, most recently, a week-long suspension.
Aside from pandemic misinformation, the Congresswoman used Twitter and other social media platforms to mock the survivors of the Parkland school massacre, share misinformation about the 2020 presidential election and voice her support for the debunked conspiracy theory known as QAnon.
House Democrats voted last year to remove Greene from her committee assignments after news reports uncovered several disturbing comments she made on social media.
With her Twitter account now permanently suspended, Greene has lost what is arguably her loudest megaphone. Her account had more than 465,000 followers and it was her biggest platform for voicing her controversial opinions.
As of Sunday morning, Greene has not yet responded to her Twitter suspension. But she still has access to her congressional office account, @RepMTG.
UPDATE: Greene has issued a statement in response to her suspension from Twitter. “Twitter is an enemy to America and can’t handle the truth,” she said. “Social media platforms can’t stop the truth from being spread far and wide. I stand with the truth and with the people. We will overcome!”
