"I'll see you on the stage": Warnock, Walker to debate October 14 in Savannah
Agreement comes after months of negotiating, attacks
Democratic U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock will face Republican challenger Herschel Walker in at least one live debate after months of negotiations and attacks from both candidates.
The debate will take place on October 14 at 7:00PM EDT in Savannah. It will be hosted by Savannah NBC station WSAV and it will be broadcasted on several stations across the state, including Fox 5 Atlanta.
Nexstar Media Group, the owner of WSAV, said that both candidates formally accepted an invitation by Tuesday afternoon.
This is only debate that Walker has agreed to participate in so far. He declined to participate in a debate in Macon — his hometown media market. Many Democrats believe that Walker, a first-time candidate who has been gaffe-prone on the campaign trail, would do poorly in a debate against Sen. Warnock.
The Democrat’s campaign had previously said that they would accept an invitation to the Savannah debate if Walker agreed to a second debate elsewhere. But they are still challenging Walker to additional debates as polls show a tightening race.
The rivals have heavily attacked one another during the negotiating process. Warnock’s campaign questioned whether his opponent was prepared to serve in the U.S. Senate if he refuses to participate in a debate. Walker told a conservative outlet that Warnock needs to “put his big mans pants on” and join him at the Savannah debate.
Nevertheless, we now know for certain that there will be at least one debate in the U.S. Senate contest. Tuesday’s agreement ends a months-long “debate over debates.”
