The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday night voted 314-117 to approve a deal between President Joe Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy to raise the debt ceiling through 2025. All eyes now turn to the Senate, where majority leader Chuck Schumer has promised a vote before the Treasury Department’s June 5 deadline.
Despite its overwhelming passage, the bill passed with a rather unusual coalition, with 71 Republicans and 46 Democrats voting against the measure. Conservatives warned that the bill does little to cut wasteful spending, while many progressives criticized the new work requirements for assistance programs.
