HAPPENING TODAY: Fulton grand jury to begin hearing Trump case
Charges to come as early as Tuesday
The public will soon know who will be facing charges in Fulton County’s Trump investigation.
That’s because District Attorney Fani Willis will begin presenting her case to a grand jury on Monday. Sources say that she will need one day to present her case and that she plans to seek indictments as early as Tuesday. It is expected that the former President and his legal team will be charged, as well as the slate of Trump electors who together signed an official electoral document falsely claiming that Trump won Georgia in 2020.
The investigation began in January 2021, shortly after Trump’s phone call with Georgia’s Secretary of State. Since then Willis has been gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses, with help from a special purpose grand jury. It is being reported that she plans to seek racketeering and conspiracy charges.
A Trump indictment in Georgia would be his fourth this year: he is facing charges in two special counsel investigations — one for mishandling classified documents and another for his actions leading up to the January 6 Capitol riot. He has also been indicted in New York for falsifying financial documents.
Nevertheless, his legal troubles appear to be fueling — not hurting — his third campaign for President. He maintains a wide lead in the Republican primary, with a recent Morning Consult national poll finding a gap of more than 40 points between Trump and his closest rival.
