Georgia to Play a Key Role in Trump's Second Impeachment Trial
After months of being the center of the political universe, Georgia will once again be front and center in Trump's second impeachment trial
Starting on Tuesday, all 100 Senators will once again sit in judgement of President Donald J. Trump, who was impeached by the House for the second time last month following a deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol. As the trial gets underway, here are just some of the roles that Georgia will play at this historic trial.
Georgia’s two new U.S. Senators, Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, are set to cast their first big votes as U.S. Senators. The two will very likely join the rest of their caucus in voting to convict the former President. However, the two Democratic newcomers have said that they will continue to fight for COVID-19 relief for struggling families, which they campaigned heavily on during the runoff election. “We need to go big and bold and fast to deliver the economic relief that people need,” said Ossoff. “If anything, more ambitious fiscal stimulus is warranted.” (AJC)
Controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who was recently stripped of her committee assignments by the House after more of her disturbing social media posts were unearthed, continues to have the full backing of Republican leadership and President Trump. Following her removal from committees, she held a press conference in which she called out Democrats and said that the Republican Party is the party of Trump. “The party is his,” she said. “It doesn’t belong to anybody else.” (NewsNation)
Over the weekend, federal agents arrested a teenager in metro Atlanta for his connections to the deadly January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. 18-year-old Bruno Cua of Milton was taken into custody after agents found disturbing posts on his Parler account, one of which said “this really is our 1776.” This is not Cua’s first run-in with the law. Last December, police were called after he was caught speeding in a school parking lot and blowing his horn with a large Trump flag on his truck while children were in the area. It is the sixth Georgia-related arrest in connection with the Capitol riot. (WSB-TV)
On Monday, Georgia election officials launched an investigation into President Trump’s repeated attempts to overturn election results. The investigation centers around that now-infamous phone call in which Trump asked Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find 11,780 votes” so that he could win the state. Raffensperger’s office said that the investigation is “fact-finding and administrative in nature.” If any criminal conduct is found, the case will be turned over to the Georgia Attorney General for further review. One of the former President’s impeachment lawyers has ties to metro Atlanta. Attorney David Schoen, who lives in Atlanta, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he was “flattered” when he was asked to represent President Trump at this historic trial. He is already leaving his mark on the trial before it begins. He requested that the Senate trial must be paused this weekend to observe the Jewish Sabbath. “He requested the trial be suspended from sunset at 5:24 p.m. on Friday until Sunday,” the AJC said.
