Former prosecutor wins Dem runoff for LG
Democrat Bailey to face State Sen. Burt Jones for GA's second-highest office
A former Fulton County assistant prosecutor who ran for Georgia Attorney General in 2018 appears to have won the Democratic runoff for Lieutenant Governor.
Democrat Charlie Bailey had initially planned to run for Attorney General once again this year but switched to the crowded Lieutenant Governor race after discussions with Democratic leaders.
He finished second in the May primary election, behind former Atlanta city councilman Kwanza Hall. A runoff was all but certain because there were a total of nine candidates, preventing anyone from obtaining more than 50% of the vote.
Gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams endorsed Bailey shortly after the primary. Hall, who served the remainder of John Lewis’ final term in Congress, avoided appearing in public settings such as debates, forums and county party meetings.
Bailey will now go up against State Sen. Burt Jones (R), a Trump-backed candidate who has spread conspiracy theories about the accuracy of the 2020 election. It’s a race that will determine who will occupy Georgia’s second-highest office, which will be tasked with presiding over a Republican-led State Senate.
