Exclusive: Moderate Dem lawmaker discusses private schools, DA oversight
State Rep. Mesha Mainor has bucked her party on key bills this session
State Rep. Mesha Mainor (D-Atlanta) has bucked her party on several major bills this legislative session.
The Atlanta lawmaker was the only Democrat to vote for a bill that would create a private school voucher system — the bill was ultimately defeated on the last day of the session.
Mainor also voted for a Republican-backed bill to create an outside commission that would exercise oversight on local prosecutors.
In a wide-ranging conversation, the moderate Democrat discussed her support for these bills and had strong words for those in her party who would like to see her face a primary challenge. We also talked about the recent expulsion of two Black lawmakers in the Tennessee legislature.
