BREAKING: Walker wins GOP Senate nod
UGA football star to face Warnock in pivotal Senate contest
Former UGA football star and Heisman trophy recipient Herschel Walker has won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, the Associated Press projects.
Walker, a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, cruised to the GOP nomination over a field that included state agriculture commissioner Gary Black and businessmen Kelvin King and Latham Saddler.
In the closing weeks of the campaign, Walker’s opponents warned that his troubled past and celebrity status could harm his chances of winning in November. Black even went as far as to say that he would not support Walker if he won the nomination.
Nevertheless, these warnings did not resonate with Republican primary voters. Walker trounced his opponents in fundraising and held wide leads in most polls.
His victory will now put him up against Democratic U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock, who will be asking Georgia voters for a full six-year term after winning a special election in January 2021.
It is a race that many believe will determine which party controls Congress come January.
