BREAKING: Kemp triumphs over Perdue to win GOP Gov primary
Kemp win sets stage for Abrams rematch
Gov. Brian Kemp has defeated former U.S. Sen. David Perdue in the Republican primary election for Governor of Georgia, according to the Associated Press.
Kemp, who is running for a second term, had drawn the ire of former President Donald Trump for refusing to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election.
Perdue was personally recruited by the former President to challenge Kemp, but he struggled to gain traction for most of the campaign and was swamped in fundraising since entering the race despite his self-funding abilities.
Kemp’s victory sets the stage for a rematch with Democrat Stacey Abrams, who he narrowly defeated in 2018. Abrams, the only Democrat in the race, cruised to the Democratic nomination on Tuesday night.
The race, which many national observers view as a toss-up, is expected to draw national attention and millions of dollars in outside spending.
