21-year-old Georgia State student seeks statehouse seat
Freshman lawmaker to face primary challenge
A 21-year-old student is challenging a first-term lawmaker for a statehouse seat.
Joshua Anthony, an Albany resident who studies economics at Georgia State University, is seeking the Democratic nomination for House District 153.
Anthony made the announcement at an Albany barber shop Friday.
“In honor of my grandfather, and in respect to our future, I announce my candidacy to be State Representative for District 153,” the Democrat said in a press release. His campaign says he plans to focus on economic development, education and rural interconnectivity.
District 153 is currently held by freshman state Rep. David Sampson (D). A shoe store owner, Sampson has lived in Albany since college after a childhood in Florida.
Rep. Sampson’s statehouse campaign in 2022 was his first run for elected office. He won the Democratic nomination to succeed outgoing Rep. CaMia Jackson and was elected with more than 65 percent of the vote in the general election.
“We shouldn’t worry about the White House so much, we should worry about our House,” Samspon said at the time. “We have to focus on us and what we can do to make things better.”
The Democratic primary is set for May 21, 2024.
